Xiaojun Chen, male, born in May 1981 in Mianyang, Sichuan Province, is a professor, doctoral supervisor in Computer Science and Technology, master’s supervisor, and Deputy Director of the Institute of Big Data Technology and Applications at the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Shenzhen University.
Professor Chen received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from Harbin Institute of Technology, and obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Application Technology in October 2011. He was a visiting student at the University of Hong Kong from 2008 to 2009 and conducted research at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, from 2009 to 2011. He joined the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology in February 2012 and subsequently joined the College of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Shenzhen University in October 2013.
Professor Chen’s research group focuses on the frontier trend of artificial intelligence evolving from large models toward intelligent agents. The group conducts research in multimodal retrieval and question answering, vision-language reasoning, knowledge enhancement, trustworthy multimodal agents, and related areas. The team emphasizes the integration of theoretical research with practical applications and maintains close collaboration with industry partners. Students interested in large models, multimodal learning, intelligent agents, and AI application systems are warmly encouraged to join the group.
In recent years, the group has carried out sustained research in multimodal learning, vision-language understanding, agent systems, and trustworthy artificial intelligence. Professor Chen has been listed for multiple consecutive years among Stanford University’s “World’s Top 2% Scientists.” He has received the Second Prize of the Shenzhen Natural Science Award and the Second Prize of the Guangdong Natural Science Award. He has also led or participated in a number of research projects, including National Natural Science Foundation of China general programs, cultivation projects under major research plans, key projects, National Key R&D Program projects, Strategic Priority Research Programs of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shenzhen key basic research projects.
His main research interests include:
Multimodal learning and cross-modal alignment;
Multimodal retrieval and multimodal question answering;
Vision-language reasoning and knowledge enhancement;
Multimodal generation and large model applications;
Multimodal agents, trustworthy agents, and agent-based AI application systems.

The research group attaches great importance to student training and encourages students to participate in high-level paper publication, open-source system development, industry collaboration projects, and domestic and international academic exchanges. The team provides students with clear research guidance, sufficient research training opportunities, and a supportive platform for academic and professional growth, helping them develop in areas such as artificial intelligence, multimodal learning, large models, and agent systems.
Graduated students have gone on to pursue further studies at renowned universities such as the National University of Singapore and the University of Hong Kong, or to work at leading companies and organizations including Tencent, Huawei, ByteDance, Meituan, Baidu, DJI, and institutions in Guangdong Province. Graduated master’s students have received honors such as the Second Prize of the Rhino-Bird Elite Talent Program and the Shenzhen University Overseas Study Award.
Professor Chen currently serves as a Council Member and Distinguished Member of the China Computer Federation (CCF). He is also an executive committee member of the CCF Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence, the CCF Technical Committee on Big Data, the CCF Technical Committee on Natural Language Processing, and the CCF Data Development Committee. He previously served as Chair of CCF YOCSEF Shenzhen and Vice Chair of CCF YOCSEF Headquarters. He is currently Deputy Director of the Large Model Technical Committee and the Data Science and Engineering Technical Committee of the Shenzhen Computer Society.
He also serves as an ACL ARR Area Chair, AAAI/IJCAI Senior Program Committee member, and Program Committee member for major international conferences including NeurIPS, CVPR, and ACM MM.
The research group is currently recruiting several postdoctoral researchers, research fellows, and research assistants. Students with backgrounds in artificial intelligence, multimodal learning, large models, and agent technologies are also welcome to contact the group, including prospective Ph.D., master’s, and undergraduate students.
Postdoctoral researchers and research fellows will be offered competitive compensation packages, in accordance with relevant policies of Shenzhen Municipality and Shenzhen University. Outstanding candidates will be actively recommended for postdoctoral talent programs, Shenzhen talent programs, and university research positions.
We welcome students and young researchers interested in multimodal learning, large models, agent systems, and AI applications to join the team and work together on artificial intelligence research with both theoretical significance and practical impact.
